Today is a big day for Canada’s BBQ School as we branch out with a new instructor.   John Thomson will be offering BBQ & grilling classes in Ontario in 2017.  John is the owner and operator of Eatapedia.com, an amazing resource and recipe blog.  He has his own Grand Championship-winning BBQ team and has regularly been at the top of results in his area for a few years now.

John brings knowledge, enthusiasm, and a wicked sense of humour to the podium.  We are proud to cooperate with John in spreading our brand of bbq & grilling know-how.   John will utilize similar content and course structure to classes we’ve offered in the past, while bringing his unique experiences and viewpoints to the classroom.

When John’s classes are open for registration, you’ll find them  here.

Instructors in Canada’s BBQ School use Yoder Smokers and Maple Leaf Charcoal.

Another BBQ season is coming to a close up in Canada, but head instructor Rob is gearing up for a couple major events – Prairie Smoke & Spice has been invited to two prestigious competitions in the US – the Jack Daniels World Championship Invitational Barbecue, and the American Royal World Series of BBQ.   These events will be held in late October in Lynchburg, TN and Kansas City, KS respectively.  This will cap off a pretty amazing season, after being asked to represent Canada at this year’s Memphis in May World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest.

We’ve had a growing number of inquiries from people who are interested in next year’s classes.  You can reserve seats in Saskatchewan classes now right here.

We will announce dates in December, with Saskatchewan classes announced at the beginning of the month and other provinces in early January.   We’ll announce everything on our social media channels so don’t forget to follow along:

Have a great winter and happy smokin’!

Another season of BBQ classes has come to a close.  We appreciate everyone’s support for a record-setting year… almost 20 classes held across  Canada, and introduced a few new ones – our first class in Ontario was held in Ottawa to 2 groups of very enthusiastic participants.  We ran our full-program advanced competition secrets class in Calgary to a full group, several of whom are already raking in the awards.

We plan to spread our wings wider in 2017!   Stay tuned for class registration – Saskatchewan dates will be open by December 1, with other provinces to follow in early January.    Have a great summer!

Yoder Smokers, in conjunction with Prairie Smoke & Spice BBQ, are proud to bring one of the USA’s top pitmasters to the Queen City for BBQ classes in March 2016.   AndyAndy_bio_pic Groneman is a 25-time Grand Champion cook from Kansas City, KS and one of the nation’s most prolific and experienced BBQ teachers.  “Andy truly represents the best in BBQ & grilling education”, says Rob Reinhardt, owner of Prairie Smoke & Spice and Canada’s largest BBQ school. “We are excited to welcome him to Saskatchewan”.   Andy has taught classes from New York state to Langley, BC and has toured Australia twice with his grills and expertise.

Three classes will be offered, including two weeknight grilling classes and a full-day advanced “Pitmaster” class.   Since Andy and Rob both cook on Yoder grills, they will be the primary grills used the class.   The classes are meant to develop skills on all types of grills and smokers, so other grilling equipment will be present also.

Registration and class details are available at www.bbqclass.ca

With the 2015 competition BBQ season coming to a close, Prairie Smoke & Spice BBQ has finished as the top BBQ team in Canada!  This award is bestowed up the team by the Canadian BBQ Society, Canada’s only national association of BBQ cooks, judges, and enthusiasts.  With only 4 events on their 2015 calendar, Prairie Smoke & Spice managed to win 3 Grand Championships – which was enough to come out ahead of every other team.   Full results can be seen here.

Prairie Smoke & Spice has earned invitations to the 3 major events in the fall competition BBQ world – the American Royal, the Jack Daniel’s World Championship Invitational Barbecue, and the World Food Championships.   The team leaves Regina on October 19 to show the world Canada can cook – and to defend their 2-time World Champion title in the Chef’s Choice category at “The Jack”.

Prairie Smoke & Spice is owned and operated by Rob & Jacy Reinhardt of Pilot Butte, SK.  They run a year-round catering business in Regina and a food truck during the summer months.  They also operate at the largest festivals in Western Canada, and run Canada’s largest BBQ School.   Their competition BBQ rubs and sauces are available at select retailers and websites.

Another season of BBQ classes has come to a close.  We appreciate everyone’s support for a record-setting year… almost 20 classes held across Western Canada.

Look for some new towns in 2016, including Winnipeg!  We will have Saskatchewan dates posted by December 1, and other provinces by January 1.  If we can settle on dates earlier than that, we will.

We also plan to hold a full Competition Secrets class in March, where you will see our full program from start to finish – recipes, techniques, presentations, you name it.  This class will likely be held in Calgary, it’s easiest for people to reach from across Canada.  If you would like to be notified when this class is announced, please Email us – info@bbqclass.ca

We are long-time users of Basques All-natural Sugar Maple lump charcoal.    It’s been relatively difficult to find in Western Canada for most of our competition history so we had only used it a few times until 2014 – when Lowe’s opened in Regina and we were able to find it on a regular basis.   It smells amazing while its being lit and the performance is great – long burn times, low ash output.

Basques is now a sponsor of Prairie Smoke & Spice and we are thrilled to use the produce in our classes, in competition, and in our summer Ribfest tour.

They are also a sponsor of the Canadian BBQ Society so they are big supporters of the BBQ community in general!

Find Basques at any Lowe’s Home Improvement store in Western Canada.

Find them on Facebook here.

After admiring these grills for a couple years now, we have acquired a pair of YS640s from the Smoker Broker, the Canadian distributor of Yoder grills.

These grills are exceptionally well built, with the best heat retention and flexibility in the industry.  They were designed with feedback from accomplished cooks like Andy Groneman right from the start.

Rob and his new Yoders

Rob is no stranger to pellet grills, with 5 different models already in his arsenal for use at home, in demos, competition, and classes.  “This is the one we’re excited about most” says Rob.  Pellet grills offer a great deal of convenience, flexibility, and most importantly – flavour.

The grills include the direct Grill Grate option, which allows for direct grilling at temperatures over 800 degrees. Performance at low temperatures is also to be stellar.

To see the evidence of their performance, one has to look no further than our friends at House of Q, who switched to a YS1500 in early 2014 and had the competition season of their career – Canadian Team of the Year and World Rib Champions.

If our first few cooks are any indication,  it’s going to be a delicious year!
